Hi all,
Have tried to tag as many relevant Australian plant people as I could (i.e., people who I recall having either observed or identified phrase name species at some point), but there are so so many (which is a good thing!), so apologies for the people I undoubtedly missed (please feel free to tag them here). In short, I've made this project to help keep track of observations of phrase name/undescribed plant species. Project link here: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/undescribed-australian-plants-phrase-name-species-and-other-entities
See project description pasted below:
In the world of Australian botany, undescribed taxa can be assigned a 'phrase name', i.e., an informal, formulaic name helpful for tracking entities within each of these units (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phrase_name). Whilst some databases, such as the ALA, have pages for these taxa, iNaturalist does not allow IDs to be made since they are still undescribed.
This project is therefore designed to be a useful tool for collating all observations of phrase name species so that they can be easily tracked, searched for, and (hopefully) identified at a later date when formally described. I believe this project will also be useful for identification purposes; there are many phrase name species (especially within WA) for which there are no photographs or descriptions online, which can make identifying them difficult.
Please feel free to also add observations of plants which are recognised as undescribed, but which are yet to be assigned a phrase name.
When adding an observation to the project, you'll be prompted with an observation field I created for noting which phrase name species your observation is. This field isn't mandatory, but will make searching for all observations of a given species much easier. If you're uploading an observation of an undescribed, but non-phrase name entity, please note in the description or a comment it's affiliations, etc.

This is great.
Would a plant that has been described, but the name not yet accepted by POWO be included in this project?
Like Pterostylis oresbia for example, described here:
https://moam.info/untitled_5baaa644097c47b7708b45a4.html
:))
I think we'll exclude those, just undescribed stuff
Very nice! I know virtually zilch about any plants but hopefully I've got some useful observations
@shawnryan Added a heap of your observations, probably missed a few
@felix-insects
Would you like to join this project?
Sounds like a great idea, so many phrased-named taxa in Western Australia, and we finding around 50 new taxa a year in WA
I'm unfamiliar with phrase names so, just to be sure I'm on the right tram, would Caladenia sp. aff. fragrantissima (Inverleigh) qualify as a phrase name? See https://vicflora.rbg.vic.gov.au/flora/taxon/9e58d561-e4b8-4277-9ca4-a564fe94c271 for more details.
that one isn't a phrase name, but still counts as an undescribed species, so good to add to the project :)
although digging into that one, is your aff. name the same entity as 'Caladenia sp. Inverleigh (N.Anderton 15) Vic. Herbarium'? (https://bie.ala.org.au/species/https://id.biodiversity.org.au/taxon/apni/51399355). If yes, then it is indeed a phrase name species
Yes Thomas. It's the same species. I'll add a few of them to the project shortly.
I've just added one as a test Thomas. Didi I get it right?
perfect :)
This looks useful. Somewhat amused to see that "Most Species" only counts observations named after the nearest recognised taxon and not those left at genus.:) no matter though
Thanks for doing this @thebeachcomber. As you know I am giving a talk (with @thebeachcomber and @gtaseski as coauthors) to the Biodiversity Information Standards meeting in Sofia, Bulgaria later this month. Officially these names are called "formulaic names" rather then "phrase names".
I have a file with some names that I will send you separately - mainly of the WA names - perhaps we can eventually list this somewhere.
I will try and add mine as I find them - I know I have quite a few. Not sure when I will get to this - possibly not until I get back from Europe.

Hi Thomas, Good on you - been think of something similar just for local species for a while now, but not got round to it. Went to the project home page but could not see how to retrospectively add my many Astrotricha sp. Wallagaraugh records to the project. Might need some coaching. Thanks.
Jackie
Hi @jackiemiles I don't think there is a way to do a batch - but
Join the Project (top right hand corner of the Project Page)
Bring up you observation
On the right - under Projects start typing "Undesc... and the option for the Project should pop up - click on that
A pop up box will appear where you can put the Formulaic/Phrase name in - then click "Add" and at the bottom "Add to Project"
If you wish (helps to search later) you can add the Formulaic/phrase name in as a Tag (put between quotes ""
Hope that helps
@jackiemiles there is a way to do a mass/batch add to to the project (or to any project), but it would mean that you can't fill out the observation field with the phrase name in this case
Awesome initiative and I think it will prove very helpful for future researchers following up on taxa distributions and ranges.
Can also help us when a Phrase name is synonymised - we can update the IDs.
@orchidrose I have joined.
Nice one guys. I'll add as I can.
Fantastic this will be so useful, thanks for the add.
This is great guys, it was frustrating that there wasn’t a way of finding undescribed species, some are quite common locally.
This is absolutely fabulous! Thank-you for tagging me.
This is absolutely fabulous! Thank-you for tagging me.
Can someone add a project icon?
done :)
@insiderelic This is the project I mentioned the other day
Can all members please try and format the Phrase/Formulaic name in the correct way. A notice that some are leaving the Genus name out of the Phrase name.
Format: Genus sp. phrase (voucher) where voucher is a collector name and number as saved in a Herbarium e.g.
Hemigenia sp. White Mountains (D.G.Fell DF1379)
Will there be a similar project for insects?
no plan for one at the moment, in part due to the tremendous amount of them
