Favourite Observation for GSB 2023

If while looking through observations, you find one that you like, that enthralls you, or that surprises or amazes you, Please VOTE for it.
To vote, look for the FAVE button. It is a star just under the map on the top right of every observation. Just click on the star to record your vote.

If while making identifications, you see an eligible observation, please VOTE for it.
The Fave button is at the bottom of the left-hand picture panel, in the middle, to the left of the "captive" and "review" buttons. Just click it to record your vote.

The observations with the most votes will go into the final selection for the observation of southern African CNC23. Similarly, many cities will be running competitions for the best photos, so remember to help by voting for the best.

What makes a great Observation?

  • A stunning picture - for whatever reason
  • Something unusual - a species, a behavior, a situation
  • An interesting story or circumstance - an interaction perhaps
  • Something that amazes you: for its beauty (or ugliness), its majesty (or plainness), its inspiration (or dread).
  • Just because you like it!

It is entirely up to you. If enough people feel the same it might be the observation of #GSB2023

Time for Phase 2 of GSB

Well done everyone on 4-days of surveying.
We are now in the Uploading and Identification phase of the Challenge, after a few days of well-earned rest.

GSB 2023 officially ends on 11 December though time is moving pretty-fast as we look forward to year-end partying. We encourage everybody to upload ASAP so that we have sufficient time to identify as many observations as possible.

If you are desperate to get going then perhaps start here:

We need to clear the Unknowns for starters
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/identify?quality_grade=any&iconic_taxa=unknown&order_by=random&project_id=167524&place_id=973923
Please only identify those that you know to family or finer level. Dont waste your time with "Plants" - you need to get it to grasses, or proteas, or peas, or daisies. Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians, Fish, Insects, Spiders and such are perfectly fine. As is fungus or lichen. Go as detailed as you can, but at this stage just push them as fast as you can to a low level: dont worry with the field guides at this stage. We will come to those in a day or two.

Please everyone help. If you want to focus first on your city, then add your city to the filter box.

Dont forget to FAVE any exciting observation that you come across
