Big healthy adult
Our class accompanied the USGS during field work. They were conducting a study on the Giant Garter Snake. Trapping, tagging, recording of observations, and tracking with radio signals. The snakes looked abnormally large compared to the garter snakes more commonly seen hence the name. Despite their size they seemed relatively more docile than their smaller cousins. Snakes were found in former fields restored to marshland their preferred habitat. The snakes are commonly found hunting among the reeds of the marsh. Like many garter snakes they are at home in or around bodies of water or wet environments.
I named this one orange for obvious reasons! This is definitely the prettiest snake I've caught, and it was one of the first! I'm almost positive it's a Garder snake, but I never! I caught a Garder and I think a racer mix before so now I get confused 🥲
one of two seen in 1/4 mile of road
Small, about 4" long.
