Description
Our class accompanied the USGS during field work. They were conducting a study on the Giant Garter Snake. Trapping, tagging, recording of observations, and tracking with radio signals. The snakes looked abnormally large compared to the garter snakes more commonly seen hence the name. Despite their size they seemed relatively more docile than their smaller cousins. Snakes were found in former fields restored to marshland their preferred habitat. The snakes are commonly found hunting among the reeds of the marsh. Like many garter snakes they are at home in or around bodies of water or wet environments.

Under a rock, had a pretty red stripe. I think it’s T. ordinoides because it had a pretty small head

I think it's a kind of garder snake but I'm not sure. It was very dark and the picture doesn't do it justice.

Relocated this gorgeous specimen to the bottoms of my half acre property where my dogs wouldn’t bother it anymore. I know it’s a threatened species so o handled with care and found it a nice safe spot away from hounds

Easily the most gorgeous T. ordinoides that I've ever caught. Incredible orange belly spots and a really bright dorsal line that dissipates as it gets near the tail.

T. ordinoides is my best guess? But I'm not great at garter snake ID.
Bobbed its head up and down while crossing in front of me. Not in the usual way they'll move when smelling around, just a steady, rhythmic bobbing.
