split into |
given that the study that split this had some major geographic gaps in sampling in eastern North America, I've gone ahead and created an overarching complex to keep observations in e.g. much of Ontario ID'd as water shrews (and not just bumped up to subgenus) until there's more clarity on range limits. (an alternative option would be to deviate from MDD, keeping S. navigator and S. albibarbis—perhaps especially the latter—conspecific with S. palustris until there's perhaps stronger evidence supporting the split)
see this flag for some discussion.
