Software for reviewing and fixing a list of species names

I made this software for a botanical garden in France, to help them update the plants labels with up-to-date names.

This software takes as input a text file with a list of species names and generates a report with:

  • the names unknown to iNat (to be further checked manually for possible spelling mistake),
  • the names updated according to iNat taxonomy (the input name was an old name or a synonym),
  • the names that are already up-to-date.

It communicates only with the iNat server. If you use it, your list of species will not be sent to anyone. This was important for the botanical garden in France using it, since they don’t publish the names of some of their plant species, for better protection. Moreover, this software works anonymously, since browsing iNat taxonomy does not require an iNat account.

When running the program, the progress shows like this:

This is the updated names section of an output report sample, with links to the taxa pages:

This software is a Windows console application, released under MIT License. It comes with its source code and with a sample input file. Contact me to get a link to download it. To use it, just double-click on the executable file, then drag and drop the file containing the list of species (one name per line).
