I broke open one of those not-yet-described "artichoke" galls on Chamise ( a-fasciculatum-bud-rosette ) and it was filled with shiny red arthropods of some sort. The critters were of different sizes but I did not notice any cast off molts.
In the field with my poor eyes I assumed that they were Tamalia style aphids although these seemed to be more mobile. But when I looked at the photos at home I could see that they did not have the kind of legs that I am used to seeing on aphids nor could I see any cornicles. I am guessing are mites, but perhaps could be bug nymphs.
