Description

It's warming up in the Coachella Valley and the snakes and lizards are coming out. This Rosy Boa was about 3 ft long. Link to confirmed observations of Coastal Rosy Boa nearby: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/168186686

Coastal Rosy Boa (Lichanura orcutti) Formerly named: Lichanura trivirgata roseofusca - Coastal Rosy Boa and Lichinura trivirgata gracia - Desert Rosy Boa). Lichanura orcutti, a.k.a. Rosy Boa, or Northern Three-lined Boa, is snake in the Boas (Boidae) family and Rubber and Rosy Boas Charininae subfamily that is found in arid habitats. It is harmless to humans, non-venomous, and kills prey by constriction.
"Lichanura orcutti is a heavy-bodied snake with smooth shiny scales and a blunt, but tapered tail. The head is only a little wider than the neck. Pupils are vertical (many other snake species have horizontal pupils).
Male/Female Differences: Males have small spurs on each side of the vent which are vestigial hind limbs.
Life History and Behavior: Primarily active at dawn, dusk, and at night, rarely in daylight, but may be active in the morning, especially in cool weather.
In the hottest and coldest months of the year, it remains inactive in burrows or under surface debris.
It is a good climber and sometimes rolls the body into a ball and hides the head when alarmed.
Diet and Feeding: Eats rodents, small birds, lizards, small snakes, and amphibians. It kills prey by constriction."
CaliforniaHerps: https://californiaherps.com/snakes/pages/l.orcutti.html

"Adults average 36 inches (91cm) in length. Hatchlings are 10 to 14 inches long. Males typically have well developed anal spurs. It has 3 stripes that run lengthwise down the dorsal and lateral aspects of the animal. These stripes may be tan, orange, brick red, or reddish-brown depending on locality. Base color varies from blue grey to tan, yellow, or nearly white. Stripes vary from defined to ill-defined depending on the individual animal. The coloration of younger animals is typically lighter with more defined striping. Despite the name "rosy boa," most individuals do not have the rosy ventral coloration from which the species derives its popular common name.
This species is found North of the US–Mexico border within San Diego County in California, along the coastal Peninsular Ranges, northward into the Mojave Desert, and eastward in the Sonoran Desert of California and Arizona. Lichanura orcutti is one of four boa species native to the continental U.S." https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/236841-Lichanura-orcutti
