I found this insect on the screen to the pool area and my sister’s dog decided to “check it out”, meaning harass it. Immediately he jumped away and had something wrong with his mouth, behaving as if this insect had stung or sprayed him in the mouth. This is fully keeping in line with the fact that this insect can and does spray an irritating, defensive spray from its metathorax.
The second photo was taken a day earlier and is the same insect. In this photo, there is a second insect and they are bound in a mating couple at the anterior thorax. The much larger female is underneath the smaller male. I observed both insects together at the same location on the screen for at least two days, bound in a mating couple, up until the dog decided to harass them and they broke up.

HUGE grasshopper
With Don Fraser; a visit to see what was around (answer: no mucho). The only nectar sources were some goldenrods and Rosy Camphorweeds. the last few blooming Nuttall's Thistles, and Tarflower, which is blooming much more than a week ago. Insects were scarce. Despite the rains of a week ago, there remains virtually no standing water. We first iNatted the helipad, which was under-whelming, so we drove the entirety of 3 Bridges Road, much of Indigo Drive, and some of Gopher Road looking for nectar sources. The weather at the start (0955) was sunny and 86 degrees ("feels like" 96) with a light breeze. By the time we left, at 1410, the temperature was 92 "feels like" 101).
