Gomphocarpus physocarpus (' Paina - de - seda'), autóctone.
Flora da Estremadura (E) - Lisboa (Parcela 30 - PBTA): 'Balloon - cotton - bush'.
This windsown Swan Plant has survived being eaten by Monarch caterpillars all Summer because, although eggs were constantly being laid on it, the wasps have quickly removed them, apart from just one that has pupated very recently. The plant has now formed a number of seed pods and can potentially produce hundreds of new plants.
Fruit with monarch butterfly larva on balloon cotton weed.
