Chaparral Yucca (Hesperoyucca whipplei)

Description

  1. Agavaceae
  2. ‘Aakul
  3. Hesperoyucca whipplei
  4. Our Lord’s Candle
  5. Found at Mission Trails off of the Visitor Center Loop. This species can be found in either chaparral or coastal sage scrub communities.
  6. The defining feature was its height. Despite its flowers being gone I could still greatly see the shape of the head hanging high above in which the flowers would be arranged. Also down below near ground the leaves are very spiky and sharp. Kumeyaay used this plant for food, coordage, and the seeds as beads.
