Hawk or falcon?
A successful dive for a fish & then flying away while being pestered by a crow (maybe a raven).
Interesting to watch this gal foraging around high in the trees, while swarms of carpenter ants were hatching out 40'-50' below. Fairly vocal, so I wonder if she had a nest nearby.
Strix nebulosa Yosemitensis
Found decapitated.
This individual shows the key characteristics of immature Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk, which are overall dark coloration mottled with white, banded outer primaries (unlike any other Red-tail morph or subspecies), primaries that don't reach the tail tip and a gray-cream colored (evenly-spaced) wavy-banded tail.
Dark-morph Harlan’s Red-tailed Hawk. - (Buteo jamaicensis harlani) it was also being chased by a red tailed hawk that was right above me.
Found dead beside a little traveled dirt road, appeared to have been killed by a predator, perhaps a Great Horned Owl?
