Large-scaled Grinner (Saurida undosquamis)

Observer

Description

Small scales, short fins, six distinct spots on each side, distinct row of sharp teeth in addition to smaller teeth rows, 26cm-long slender body: < 1.5cm at the widest point & < 2.5cm deep in the body.
Caught on a pink hardbody lure trolling from a kayak; unfortunately could not be returned to the water alive as it had swallowed the leading treble hook.
Caught in shallow (1.6m) sand-mud flats on a falling tide (1.5 hrs before ebb).

Description

Poor quality shot but shows the lazy way to image fish (at a roadside pullover, creek then passed under a culvert ) in a tiny creek flowing steeply towards coast over large boulders. We stopped just long enough for me to squat on edge and stick camera into a little rock pool which had clear fresh water and lots of small fish!
