On a south-facing rocky talus slope in rich woods of oak, hickory and maple in the shade. The dropping heads look like Poa saltuensis at a glance, to which the algorithm agreed. Surprised to see this is only the second iNat observation in Massachusetts of this widespread and fairly common (S4S5) grass.
I have no experience with this species, but all fruit clusters are terminal and the AI also suggested C. scandens. Growing from a mostly open talus community of very large boulders. @karro_frost. @wernerehl. @threepogonias.
Tentative ID.
Very common in Europe. Not so in the US. Widespread and abundant in this particular meadow.
Rich steep rocky slope
A large, wild population no doubt maintained over the last 150 years by the adjacent railroad track which would have spread occasional fire across this stand.
Only a few plants observe (and pulled) but it wasn't my target today.
