This image is from a series of slides taken by John Marek in the 1970s and 80s as a WA Fisheries Research Technician onboard Taiwanese trawlers fishing Glomar Shoal. His role was to identify trawled fishes and educate the crew regarding permissible catches, sizes, etc. In a fascinating conversation, John told me his stints onboard boats within a 10 vessel fleet were usually 3 months at a time! Colonising an area of collapsing Acropora sp. coral
Three individuals observed, feeding on scraps (squid bits) being thrown to them by returning boaties. At least 2 had research tags in their backs from tagging done by Flinders uni researchers earlier in 2022.
