Growing mostly on a walking/off-roading path which goes through coastal sage scrub and grasslands. The purple spores are evident (see esp. last photo of a fruiting body which was disturbed) and have an interesting smell. Many of the fruiting bodies were already detached from the ground and strewn across it, probably disturbed by human activity or wild animals that might have walked on the path.
found among a black Cottonwood and alder. 10 ft from Elwha River near old Douglas fir stump. This spot was underwater 11 years ago
