Description
European mountain ash is sporadic along the Gallagator Trail system and then found mostly streamside. The tree growth habit and leaves often with 13 or more leaflets distinguish this introduced escaped ornamental from the native Sorbus in this area, Sorbus scopulina, western mountain ash. This 2020 site lies along the Gallagator trail by the bridge that crosses Spring Creek, just southwest of the Peets Hill area, Bozeman, Montana.

Description
Velvet lupine growing in montane parkland below Saddle Peak and along the Middle Cottonwood Creek trail, west side of the Bridger Range, Gallatin County, Montana. Velvet lupine is diagnosed by a hairy (sericeous) banner petal, densely velvety leaves and stems with widely spreading hairs, and flowering during the middle summer. Silky lupine co-occurs with velvet lupine at this site but silky lupine is taller statured (30-60 cm tall) and was with immature spikes of small flower buds at this time. Co-occurring silvery lupine (Lupinus argenteus) was mostly past flowering at similar montane elevations in this area.

A close inspection of all fruits on 2 spikes showed all to have 3-parted walls. Not as hairy as they maybe could be, but definitely hairy. Huge dark green leaves, white chalky bark, and riparian habit are all supporting features. All material in hand was taken from 25' up.

Description
Erysimum capitatum growing in postfire Douglas Fir forest (with some Rocky Mountain juniper and limber pine) at the south end of the Bridger Range, Gallatin County, Montana. The burn occurred September 2020. Plants in flower were photographed June 2023 and the plant in fruit during July 2022. The erect ascending fruits and dolabriform hairs uniformly scattered along the stem distinguish this species from Erysimum asperum (western wallflower).
