Description

Adenia wilmsii 3 Nov 11_002

RDL classification EN. Restricted distribution previously known only from the Lydenburg district. New populations found in the Elands valley on both sides of the N4 highway. Plants appear to grow best with the bulbous root secreted under a rock for protection from predation (by porcupine?). Plants scandent or upright, tend to rest on adjacent plants. Reach a height of circa 600mm under good conditions. When growing in the pre-rain period, plants tend to flower early and while the plant is still small, exhibiting a red-purple tinge to the leaves and stalks through moisture and heat stress.
