Description

Metasequoia glyptostroboides
The living fossil from the Giant Redwood family, commonly known as the Dawn Redwood. Closely resembles the Chinese swamp cypress. It was presumed extinct and described from fossils until a chance discovery of a living specimen in China in the 1940s. Seeds were sent worldwide for propagation. In India it was sent to Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, Uttarakhand. It was subsequently established in Dehradun, Shillong, Darjeeling. After so many decades, the exact location of this specimen in Shillong was recently discovered.

In pics: Adult tree, dried leaves, pollen bearing cones and seed bearing cones.
