Coleopteran bumbling along
I came upon this extremely beautiful beetle while looking for dragonflies and snakes.
Juvenile female Sympetrum corruptum
Shortly after I took this shot the dragonfly flew to a new spot directly on the ground and was immediately pounced upon by a male Anax junius who took her in the air to eat.
I followed them to try and get some shots but before I could catch up the female somehow escaped and flew in some brush. The male made a quick u-turn and flew back around but did not attempt to locate/retake her. I took a few shots of her afterward and it looked like she sustained no significant damage.
Male Epitheca sp. emerging
I was walking back to the truck and glancing over the vegetation at the edge of the pond when I noticed one of the exuviae was moving.... He started his journey from the water some time between my first pass of the pond and the trip back.
Justin and I watched the emergence but before he took flight we decided it was lunchtime.
