A green chiton attached to a half crab. We observed this alien looking commensal beast while undertaking an intertidal survey on the reefs off Hawera. It made us jump when we first turned over the rock.

This has been an interesting learning curve for me. Bought on by me always being curious. Plus some mistaken thinking. Although, I have photographed little wasps on this Ootheca over the last few months, I didn’t relate the tiny holes in the Ootheca to them. Instead I thought it meant the baby Praying Mantis had emerged out of them.
So, thinking it was old and empty, I wanted to see what it looked like on the inside. I was not prepared for what I found.
Inside I found the larvae of Genus Podagrion. The first two images are clearly female showing the unmistakable Ovipositor. As for the other images I’m not sure if some are just shedded skins. Not having a microscope I couldn’t tell. I put the Ootheca back together as best I could. The next morning I had one wasp.
Over the next few days 3 more hatched. All have been released now. I also learned that the little holes in the Ootheca, are made by the female’s Ovipositor piercing through the Ootheca to deposit her eggs, onto the Mantis eggs, for them to feed on.

A magpie was wandering around in the yard hunting for insects in the grass. Seems to be female from the pale neck feathers. She jumped up onto the chair with the clothes line peg basket. She turned around multiple times and wiped her beak along the top edge of the basket. She stopped and warbled a number of times before returning her attention to the basket and sat for a while before moving on.

The magpie goose was resting at the feet of some people chatting at a table. He is known at the wetlands as he was a rescue who failed to join the resident magpie goose flock when he was released. He prefers to hang around people and can often be seen around the buildings. Signs instruct people not to feed him.

The Willie Wagtail is feeding its chicks with a dragonfly. A dragonfly does not seem to be the food that chicks like.
It is usually offered to another chick until it is taken.
I have seen this behaviour i nests in other areas.
The nest seems to be in a precarious spot.
