The bontebok is an interesting story. Extinct in the wild, but not endangered.

Hunted almost to extinction, down to about 20 animals in the 1930s, the surviving bontebok were translocated and benignly introduced to parks, reserves, and private farms across the Western Cape and elsewhere in Southern Africa. Like tigers, there are now more bonteboks living outside their native range than inside. The population of >3000 is considered secure and stable.

Bontebok

Although an alien (introduced from the south coast), Bontebok can be found in young veld (which has some grass), but seldom in mature Fynbos that has no food for them. They prefer Renosterveld which has sufficient grass and productivity to maintain populations. However, they are sufficiently threatened that there are no plans to remove them from the reserve.

Grazing lawn

The higher fertility of the gravel at the end of the road (used for erecting cellphone masts on Teeberg (right among the Audiounia plants and Serruria collina - how permission was granted heaven knows, but at least largely confined to an old forestry fire lookout house) is being used by the buck as a grazing lawn. No photos, but lawn is mostly Kwic Cynodon dactylon.

Bontebok

Medium-sized antelope about 1m high at shoulder. Males slightly larger and heavier built.Different shades of brown,white belly and lower legs.White stripe vertically across the face and distinctive white patch around its tail.Both sexes have horns,which are lyre-shaped and ringed.Restricted to coastal Fynbos and Renosterveld.
