Latin for “unexpected” Phelsuma inexpectata was discovered in 1966 in a small village called Manapany. Unfortunately, falling under the IUCN Red-List criteria of occupying an extent of occurrence under 100 km² Phelsuma inexpectata qualifies as critically endangered but is not officially recognized.
