Description
This is one of those heartbreaking observations. I was scanning the landscape for coyotes, my favorite sighting in this part, and I saw something moving in the distance. I looked through the viewfinder and realized it was a prone coyote. The tail appeared to be fluttering, and then I thought I saw the ear move. At the same time, when I looked at the photos, the tail almost appears to have been dislocated from the body. Altogether, it was a strange and sad sight. I couldn’t get closer because it was a restricted area. I don’t know what happened to the poor thing, but It appeared to have died at that moment, or maybe within a short time before, or else, was mortally wounded. Still, I can't say for sure because I was too far away.

Description
Garden cucumber leaf. Looking like a flight over an agricultural landscape, this patchwork pattern is characteristic of a mosaic virus infection. An inexpensive stereo microscope was used for a closer look at the green and brown rectangles. Trichomes were an interesting target, appearing more white and opaque in the brown areas versus more translucent in the live, green areas. A square cm of leaf tissue was put on glass slide with water and a coverslip and observed under a compound microscope. Surprisingly, nematodes appeared to be wriggling out of the tissue (at least a dozen or more were observed), suggesting this may be a nematode disease rather than CMV (?). Note, this leaf was trellised and had no ground contact.

Such a gothic beauty!!! Would love to grow some in my future personal goth garden.
Usually try to avoid cultivated plants but this was too perfect to pass up. Also the ends of the flowers make them look like the open mouthed fangs of a venomous snake!
