A newly-excavated Red-bellied Woodpecker cavity has been discovered by a European Starling. The male and female Red-bellied are both visible in this photo and the male is trying to pull the Starling out of the nest by its foot.

He was drumming on his log before sunrise, then hopped off and ran the ~100 feet to the corner of the house, where there were remnant seeds from the feeders. As the sun rose, he ran back to his log and, facing the rising sun, resumed drumming.

A life species for me! This little squirrel was digging seeds out of the snow under the bird feeder. I've thought we might have flying squirrels here because sometimes late at night, we hear the typical sounds of red or gray squirrels racing along the outside of our log cabin walls, but likely not either of those diurnal species.
