Walking on bush track.
I sought advice from the Australian Bat Society, who consulted some of their experts. The following text is from the email I recieved:
Hello again Lisa,
I have sought a second opinion from Victoria's foremost bat expert, Dr Lindy Lumsden from the Arthur Rylah Institute. She is confident that your bats are Vespadelus regulus, The Southern forest bat. her specific comments were:
They are a Vespadelus and I would say they are V. regulus based on the reddish brown fur colour, flat head, and pale triangle on bottom lip (compared to V. darlingtoni which has a black triangle). I would expect them to be reasonably common in the Ballarat area. Good photos.
Thank you for sharing your photos with the Australasian Bat Society, and for having such a positive attitude towards these amazing creatures.

ABS Inquiries.
For most of the year the bats live in a space on the roof of our deck, and when it is warm they move to the entrance and hang out in fresh air.
The one being held got inside and we are just putting it back outside.
