Description

URI NRS 323 Fall 22’ (Section 1) - This red maple was found along Flagg Road across from the fine arts lot in a disturbed area with other trees and low woody growth around it. The tree was found in an area that is well lit and is also in an area where the soil is usually moist because the flatness of the area pools water during rainstorms. What made this tree stand out as a red maple is the characteristic red on top of each leaf’s petiole. Additionally, each stem has leaves that are composed of three points that are opposed to one another on the stem. Red maple leaves are also more pointed on their edges than that of other maple trees; which gives their leaves a toothy appearance. Since the bark is relatively dark grey and appears to be more on the rough side I concluded that this tree is a mature red maple as the bark is more worn than younger relatives of its kind.
