Long shot. Terrible pic, I had two dogs yanking leashes…
I was inspecting a tree-of-heaven for spotted lanternfly (none found), and came across two clusters of these bugs. Both clusters were on the undersides of branches, right at a Y-joint. The bugs are roly-poly like, but flatter and with some variance in color (grey, tan, speckled); roughly roly-poly size, as well.

First record in Contra Costa for the species as far as I'm aware. I have observed multiple in the same area under rocks, but could never get one to sit still for long enough to take a photo of anything but a blur.
I'll be returning to take in situ photos after purchasing a quality macro lens.
