International Monarch Monitoring Blitz (July 28 – August 6)

The International Monarch Monitoring Blitz is happening from July 28 to August 6 and there is still time to get those monarch observations in. Join thousands of nature enthusiasts across Canada, Mexico and the United States and help support monarch butterfly conservation.

Head out during this 10-day period to find milkweed plants and look for monarch eggs, caterpillars, chrysalises and butterflies. All monarch observations will be shared with the Trinational Monarch Knowledge Network. Since milkweed and monarch butterflies are so widespread throughout North America, community scientists' contributions are essential to expanding our knowledge of the reproductive success of the monarch breeding population as well as long-term population trends.

The only organized trinational effort to capture a snapshot of the monarch and milkweed summer distribution is this Blitz. The event from the previous year was such a success that information gathered during the Blitz helped identify priority regions for monarch conservation and direct conservation measures.

The conservation of the monarch butterfly is gaining momentum across North America, and its important for communities (like the Observation Nation) to get outside into nature and support this initiative.

So, grab your cameras and get out into nature and make this international monarch monitoring blitz a success.

Happy monarch hunting!
