Big Trees in South Africa

The National Register of Big Trees in South Africa was created in 1982 by the Dendrological Society of South Africa (DSSA). Known as the Big Tree Register, its aim is to identify and record the largest native tree species. To date, more than 220 trees have been measured and cataloged, including some from Botswana. Trees are assessed based on a size index that factors in trunk diameter at chest height, overall height, and crown diameter.

Note: While this is not an official project of the Dendrological Society of South Africa (DSSA), it is in support of their campaign to document noteworthy trees.
