Platypus

Ornithorhynchus anatinus

In the Adelaide region 2

Continued presence unconfirmed. Largely nocturnal. Known to have previously occurred in the region, but believed to have gone extinct on the South Australian mainland in the 1970s. Occasional anecdotal reports from the Onkaparinga and Stuart Rivers may reveal that the species has either survived undetected or recently re-established in the region (most likely through escapees from Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary), but indisputable evidence has yet to come forward. Could be deliberately reintroduced to the River Torrens in the future.
