Great Southern Bioblitz 2022 Umbrella

Hi all,

The Great Southern Bioblitz Umbrella- 2022 has been created. Please join the project and keep in checking back to see how the project is growing.

We have also created participants' sign-up forms for the GSB (English only at the moment) this will allow us to print certificates for organisers to give to participants this year. If you received a certificate last year you don't need to reregister here

GSB2021 Umbrella project

Great Southern Bioblitz English
( note Spanish & Portuguese below)

Great news, we have set up the Umbrella project for the GSB2021, while we are developing a new banner for 2021 and still working behind to make 2021 better organised we have made the project live to allow us to add projects throughout the year and do journal posts etc. Having projects join will help us direct our assistance and know the areas we need to work on so organisers get your projects ready. I would like to encourage all of you to join.

Great Southern Bioblitz Umbrella- 2021

If you are keen and want to organise an area for this year please set your project up then you don't have to worry about it later, I feel it would also be good to have these projects up to encourage others to join. find out how to be an organiser here

we also have just made a Members Project

"GSBiogroup" we have done this to help increase connectivity between organisers and people associated with the GSB. ie see what people are doing in other regions or countries. we are also using the observations to share on social media. so please also check that out.

If you are not a member of the GSB website then please consider joining, as we are doing a monthly newsletter highlighting members activities and blogs, please remember to indicate language we current translate to English, Spanish and Portuguese.
We also welcome any blogs you may wish to do on your group's activity if this interests you.

There's still time to upload and ID!

Hello Great Southern Bioblitzers!

What an amazing effort in our first ever year; in just 4 days, you contributed over 61,000 observations of more than 9,000 species. Even more excitingly, these efforts were thanks to 2,600 observers! It's awesome to see so many people involved, getting connected with nature, and contributing valuable biodiversity data.

But we're not done yet! Although the window for observing is over, you can still upload your photos. There will now be a 10 day window (so up until midnight of Thursday the 8th of October) to allow everyone to upload any photos they have left from the 4 days. Also importantly, these 10 days will be valuable for identifying your observations, so get out your field guides and start IDing! If you've managed to ID all of your own observations, have a look through some of the other amazing observations in the project and see if you can help others out.

I'm looking forward to next year's GSB already!

GSB: 1,000+

We have This project is for those current Australian iNaturalist contributors planning on taking up the GSB challenge, to push the limits, and to see just how many species and observations they can record in 4 days. Did you participate in the City Nature Challenge 2020? Looking to break your observations or species record?

Here you'll be able to find useful tips and techniques that can help you maximise your contributions.

The 4 Bioblitz days are a great opportunity to take some time to discover the incredible depth and breadth of biodiversity in everything from National Parks to your own backyard.

Do you think you could record 1,000 observations during the challenge? How about 500 species? With a lot of enthusiasm and a little effort, both are quite achievable. These journal posts will centre around achieving those targets but can be equally applied to any personal targets. Set yourself a goal and see just how much you can discover in 4 days, join the challenge project and test yourself against the #BiodiversityChamps.

‘Great Southern BioBlitz’ 2020

The Great Southern BioBlitz is based on the same format as the worldwide City Nature Challenge (CNC) held earlier in the year. The CNC is held each year in April with over 250 participating cities to observe and record nature in their area. The event organised by Los Angeles Natural history Museum and the Californian Science Academy. In 2020, four Australian cities, Adelaide, Geelong, Redlands and Sydney were involved in the four days BioBlitz with Australians recorded almost 25,000 animal, fungi, and plant observations.
Following the success of the CNC, the Australian cities involved have combined to organise the Great Southern BioBlitz to highlight the biodiversity of our country in the flourishing springtime when flowering plants and many creatures are more evident in rural and city environments.
The GSB organising committee is also eager to have as more many people from the southern hemisphere involved in this event where people participating at each location are striving to find and photograph as many species as possible within the event time frame. The event has proven to be a great way to engage people about nature and to learn about the animals and plant in their area.
The event will be held from Friday 25 September till the end of Monday 28 September with survey areas based on local government boundaries. Each participating group can define its observation range as being one or more local government areas.

Join us we have a look on our project list for an area near you,

We look forward to your area being involved and please free to contact us by email. greatsouthernbioblitz@gmail.com
