My partner (Kerri-Lee Harris) and I live in a 4ha patch of dry sclerophyll forest on the far south coast of NSW, Australia. By observing and recording animal, plant and fungal species and their interactions we are building our knowledge of the local ecology. Invertebrates are a particular passion - and moths are a serious addiction for me - but every native species is fair game for our cameras and curiosity.

We try to identify our sightings before uploading - in part because it’s fun, and also to encourage assistance from iNats contributors who specialise in particular taxa. We welcome suggestions and corrections. We’re not precious about our identications!

We are progressively uploading past sightings from our shared collection of organisms encountered both at home and during our travels in Australia and overseas.

In addition to sharing our species sightings on iNats, we record stories and information on our home website: www.southernforestlife.net

Before retiring in 2011, I was an academic and researcher at various universities and research institutes, including Research School of Biology, ANU, Max Planck Institute, Tübingen, Germany, Department of Zoology, University of Melbourne and University of New England and finally, Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, University of Melbourne. My research fields were development of the nervous system using insect model organisms (cockroaches, grasshoppers, Drosophila) and evolutionary developmental biology (macroevolution of the arthropods).
