I followed @davemmdave's example on this one. It lacks the spots of a Spotted Seastar.

What

Sand Crab Ovalipes australiensis

Observer

wamoz

Date

December 11, 2019 12:15 PM ACDT

Description

These were numerous along the Shark Bay shoreline today - I've grouped a few for effect.
Mostly only the lower plate and legs remained, but there were occasional top shells that proved the identity (see image #2).

Different to all previous gastropod observations.
The fluting in the aperture - seen best in image #3 - is distinctive / not common.

What

Sargassum Seaweed Sargassum fluitans

Observer

wamoz

Date

December 10, 2019 12:32 PM ACDT

Description

I think this is a cluster of 'pods' from a Sargassum plant.
The doubt arises because these are all clustered together (like a flower) rather than being arranged along a stem as is usually the case.

What

Non-biting Midges Family Chironomidae

Observer

wamoz

Date

December 8, 2019 05:43 PM ACDT

Description

First obs for the Mozzie Monitors initiative.
These are two of about a dozen insects sitting passively on the wall in the late afternoon heat. As soon as the sun goes down, they will be joined by several dozen more to annoy anyone silly enough to sit outside.
Typically, they become extremely numerous and active soon after dark but then ease-off as the night progresses ... still present but less intensive.
I tried to pick as specific taxon based on this excellent reference - https://www.coorong.sa.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/Mossie_Fact_Brochure.pdf - but had to remain fairly generic (and possibly wrong)!

What

Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin Tursiops aduncus

Observer

wamoz

Date

December 8, 2019 08:48 AM ACDT

Description

Teeth size and number indicate Indo-Pacific Bottlenose - about 2.4 m long.
Starting to deteriorate but I couldn't see any sign of physical trauma ... the hole near the jaw in image #3 looked like the result of scavenging.
Deposited at the high-water mark.

Mauve-mouth Ascidian Herdmania grandis

Observer

Description

These come in various odd shapes and sizes, but this is one of the more unusual shapes I've found.
The siphon apertures were motile while I was handling it so still very much alive.

I believe this is the still-attached 'fruit' of Posidonia ... in January I recorded free-floating segments after they had detached from the stem.

Observer

Description

The two-tone colouration of the smaller one caught my eye. I figured it may have been as a result of outer layer erosion which is clearly shown on the larger specimen.
(This may be a new taxon for me ... unusual because they are quite common).

What

European Starling Sturnus vulgaris

Observer

Description

Given the location, I had originally thought this might be a Pigeon ... they nest in the coastal cliffs in this area.
However the prominent yellow gape flanges and the feet configuration make a Starling the more likely taxon (I think).
