What
Nematoceran Flies (Suborder Nematocera)Observer
bnunquamDescription
Caught in a Biotrap V2 with a CueLure Qfly pheromone. Suspect that bycatch is incidental— trap had been out a week and poor weather occurred after 4 days— only then was this specimen caught.
Algorithm suggests Chironomidae but colouration diverges from description in CSIRO, 1991.
Algorithm suggests Trichocera (crane flies)
— Description seems to match brief for TIPULOMORPHA; in CSIRO, 1991.

Suspecting, based on wing shape (CSIRIO and Lonsdale, 2009), that this is a Heteromeringia sp.

Common Drone Fly (Eristalis tenax)Observer
bnunquamDescription
Forgive the quality, these hoverflies are blazingly fast and wary beings. In picture 1, I caught this one mid-take-off.
Very hard to get a macro-lens shot even when waiting for it to return to the flower it was on after being spooked by my camera.
I think it's Mesembrius based on description of colouration and thorax pattern in picture 3 matched with AM: https://australian.museum/learn/animals/insects/hover-flies/

I made a hugel vegie garden from old rotted bush timber. I speculate these are growing out of it! Thoughts?
