This was a gorgeous specimen I found fruiting on the side of a hill in a mixed conifer forest. There were Gyromitra scattered about every 10 feet on this hillside.

Description

I found a small troop of these fruiting in the duff under a mixed conifer forest. The largest cap was 7 cm wide, and they were about 12 cm tall. There was an annulus with a partial veil remaining on the younger specimens. It also had a distinctly bulbous base. Cap and stipe were slimy when wet. Spore print was white.

The spores were smooth and elliptical with pointed apiculus, and a large guttule inside. The basidia had 4 sterigma.

Description

This orange fungi was all over a recently burned area in the Cascades. It was bright orange with little bits of white around the edge of the pile. Each pile of orange fungi was about 4 inches wide. The older specimens had little cups that were orange on the inside and blackish on the outside. On ash, or very burned areas. In Ponderosa Pine forest.
The spores were elliptical and smooth.

Description

A budding mycoheterotroph found at about 1200 ft elevation in rich humus, also next to a blooming Calypso orchid. I will have to go back and see this thing in full bloom!

Saddle-shaped False Morel Gyromitra infula

Description

This was found in a hemlock mixed forest in the soil. The upper side of the cap was brown and the underside was a creamy white. The stipe was the same creamy color. The stipe was a bit wrinkled but much smaller than the cap.
Cap was 60mm wide and the entire specimen was 45mm tall.
The spores are smooth, elliptical and biguttule. I mounted my section in DI water and used x10 x40 and x100.
