Long basal leaves hard to see in photo, as they are entwined with Ephedra californica. I have seen this species mostly in Coastal Sage Scrub and coastal Chaparral communities.

My wife found this one chillin’ on the front porch, resting his chin on a paint can. About 3.5 feet long. Caught and relocated 100 or so meters away.

Red Diamond Rattlesnake (Crotalus ruber)Observer
archmcDescription
Young snake; just under 2 feet long with 6 rattle segments, including the “button. Medium reddish brown with the usual black and white stripes at the tail. I didn’t think to photograph this guy until after I released him into an Ephedra about 200 yards from where I caught him by my front door. I catch/relocate an average of about 5-6 per year of this species around my house, almost the only species of rattlesnake I’ve seen in this part of Morongo Valley. I have numerous other iNat observations of this species.
