Mass Audubon's Great Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary, Barnstable, MA

This past weekend, I walked with my family through Mass Audubon's Great Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary in Cape Cod. I had never been on the trails there before, so it was nice to explore the trails for the first time. It was a sunny day, though occasionally there were strong gusts of wind. Along the trails, there were many fallen branches from the stormy weather a few days before. As I was walking, I noticed many holly plants, which I was surprised by. I was also surprised by the variety plants I found on the walk. This walk encouraged me to pay closer attention to the plants in my surroundings. I also saw many ferns, though many appeared to be dead or dying. In addition, I also noticed that there were not many plants with flowers during this time. While I was walking, there was also a group of turkeys nearby, so I added that to the journal entry as well.

Edmands Park, Newton, October 6, 2020

It was a beautiful day today. It was a little warmer than it has been the past few days, but not too warm. The leaves had changed more than the last time I was there, and as I walked deeper into the park the colors became more vibrant. I decided to walk down a path that I had not walked through before. It was interesting to be looking for fungi on this nature walk. Instead of just searching for living organisms in general, it was interesting to be focusing on fungi, which I thought were a little harder to find. However, if I had not been actively searching for the fungi, I probably would not have noticed them at all. While they were a little tougher to find, I was still surprised by the number of fungi scattered throughout the park. Almost all of the fungi that I found were growing on trees, which ties together nicely with this module. While some of the fungi were not benefitting trees that were alive (as most of the fungi were growing on fallen dead trees), it was interesting to see how they grew on so many trees. I wonder if they were in the process of breaking down the dead trees. Additionally, I saw a woodpecker and thought it would be a nice addition to his journal entry.

Walk Through Edmands Park, Newton, September 29, 2020

I walked through Edmands Park, located along the border of the Boston College Newton Campus. It was a beautiful day; not too humid, and not too cool either. It had been a little cloudy in the morning, but the sky cleared up just in time for my nature walk! I hadn't been inside Edmands Park before, but I was pleased to learn that there are many beautiful trails within the park. At the entrance of the park, the trees' leaves were mainly green, however upon venturing further into the park, the leaves were a variety of colors. It was peaceful to watch the leaves fall with the gentle breezes. It was interesting how the colors of the leaves varied so much from the beginning of the trails to deeper within the park. In addition, I was also surprised by the number of squirrels and chipmunks in the park. There seemed to be a squirrel or chipmunk every few feet! Sometimes, I was a little startled as the squirrels would suddenly run across the path in front of me. I noticed that there appeared to be a stream running through the park, however there was no water flowing through. It probably dried up due to the drought. I'd be interested to see the plants that grow alongside the stream when water is flowing through.
