Description

Flower scarab - Valgus canaliculatus (males, ~5 mm)
These were all over the persimmon flowers, often disappearing most of the way down into the flower. I have usually found them on Viburnum previously. These always remind me of ticks. Genus name is Latin valgus, "bow-legged".
These are canaliculatus (versus V. seticollis), based on:

  • dark reddish brown (vs. piceous)
  • anterior tibiae with 3 slender, widely-separated teeth on outer side (vs. 5-6)
  • pronotum with many small teeth along edge (vs. large teeth)
  • overlapping cream-colored scales on abdominal sternites (vs. non-overlapping, tawny); visible in one image

Female of canaliculatus has long process on pygidium, lacking here, so these should be males. It seems that primarily males visit flowers (Ratclifee and Paulsen). The species is termetophilous--eggs, larvae, and adults can be found in the galleries of Reticulitermes flavipes (several references below).
