''Galana hybrid giraffe'' - Tsavo East NP
In some places vicinity of the Galana River, which flows through Kenya's largest Tsavo East National Park, giraffes are naturally hybridized (especially during the dry season when the river does not form a barrier on some sections). The Reticulated giraffe (G.c.reticulata) lives north of the Galana River, while the Masai giraffe (G.c.tippelskirchi) lives on the south side bank. Hybrids of these two subspecies are more similar to the Masai giraffe, but the size and shape of the spots resemble a more reticulated subspecies. They are referred to in the literature as the so-called Galana hybrid Giraffe (Kingdon, 1997). Galana hybrid giraffe can also be mixed in normal herds (and vice versa). They are most commonly observed in the southeastern part of Tsavo East in the Galana River Valley.
Terrorised the valley for a while.
A lot of mainly small bluebottles along the strand line in Whites Bay and at North Piha,
I was surprised to find a dead deer lying in a ditch along Sparks Road, between the suburbs of Halswell and Hoon Hay. This is X-files bizarre. I have no idea why someone would have dumped this carcass here. Or did someone hit it in a car? Fallow deer are not a common species in New Zealand either. Very odd.
Young fawn, maybe fallow
Four wild red deer — three hinds and a fawn — on the hill behind my place.
Hind and yearling. A couple of others seen in the area later in the day.
Ran across the river to the north bank (successfully) when scared off by walkers
Two doe grazing on lawn.
Not very confident with deer, no real idea on the species, just a guess to get the ball rolling! Roadkill.
