Spilopelia chinensis

Summary 7

The Spotted Dove (Spilopelia chinensis) is a small and somewhat long-tailed pigeon which is a common resident breeding bird across its native range on the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. The species has been introduced into many parts of the world and feral populations have become established. This species was formerly included in the genus Streptopelia with other turtle-doves, but studies suggest that they differ from typical members of that genus. This dove is long tailed...

Migration 11

Non-Migrant: Yes. At least some populations of this species do not make significant seasonal migrations. Juvenile dispersal is not considered a migration.

Locally Migrant: No. No populations of this species make local extended movements (generally less than 200 km) at particular times of the year (e.g., to breeding or wintering grounds, to hibernation sites).

Locally Migrant: No. No populations of this species make annual migrations of over 200 km.

Ecology 12

Hawaii: highest densities in relatively dry areas on Molakai, about 40-80 per sq km.

Behaviour 13

"Familiar everywhere in open well-wooded and cultivated country. It avoids desert and barren tracts and is never found far from water. Pairs may commonly be seen gleaning in stubble fields and fallow land, anil along village roads and cart tracks. If unmolested the birds become very tame and confiding freely entering gardens and verandahs. The flight, as of the other doves, is swift and strong accomplished by vigorous wing-strokes. The call is an oft-repeated pleasant, though mournful, kroo-kfuk-kruk-kroo. . . kroo-kroo-kroo , the number of final kroos varying from 3 to 6."

Lifespan, longevity, and ageing 14

Maximum longevity: 9.8 years (wild) Observations: Maximum longevity in banding studies is at least 9.8 years (http://bna.birds.cornell.edu/).

Reproduction 15

Usually 2 eggs are incubated by both sexes for 14 days (Harrison 1978). Nestlings are altricial.

Justification
This species has an extremely large range, and hence does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the range size criterion (Extent of Occurrence <20,000 km2 combined with a declining or fluctuating range size, habitat extent/quality, or population size and a small number of locations or severe fragmentation). The population trend appears to be increasing, and hence the species does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population trend criterion (>30% decline over ten years or three generations). The population size has not been quantified, but it is not believed to approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population size criterion (<10,000 mature individuals with a continuing decline estimated to be >10% in ten years or three generations, or with a specified population structure). For these reasons the species is evaluated as Least Concern.
