Description

Update on July 21/21: There will be no further observations in this photo series – all of the caterpillars were gone when I checked today. At the start (May 23), there were about 150-200 eggs and most of those eggs hatched into caterpillars. The caterpillars seemed to be growing and doing well, and there seemed to be about the same number of caterpillars each day I checked. This changed on July 10 – when I checked that day, there were less than 20 caterpillars (down from well over 100 the day before). At that time, the caterpillars were less than 2.5 cm long so I’m not sure what happened to them as I don’t think they were big enough to pupate yet. Since July 10, the remaining caterpillars have continued to grow. Over the past several days, the number of caterpillars decreased almost every day until, today, none were left. I hope that at least some of the caterpillars found a safe place to pupate and that maybe I will get to see them later this year as butterflies.

Eggs started out a light orange-yellow color which gradually became more orange and slightly darker over days 1 to 9. On day 10 (June 2), eggs had darkened to a distinct red-purple color. The eggs darkened slightly but remained a reddish-purple color from day 11 to day 21. On day 22 (Jun 14), the eggs were a much darker purple color. On day 23 (Jun 15) the eggs were black. And they hatched on day 24 (Jun 16)!

animal ran along the trail away from us then into the oak forest - as soon as it was in the forest, it climbed into the shrubs and from there up into the trees -about 50 metre into the trees, it spent quite a few minutes on a large branch in the trees about 5 metres above the ground moving back and forth looking back at us and surveying its surroundings then returned to the ground and ran off further into the forest - the tracks are from where the animal left the trail
the animal was larger than a squirrel, smaller than a fox; its face was lighter than its body and the tail was darker than both; the tail was as long as the body and very thick and bushy; the ears were large and pointed; it made no sounds in our hearing;
