Purple Beard Orchid Calochilus robertsonii

Observer

marmotty

Date

October 19, 2019 08:28 AM +11

Description

This plant is in the Orchidaceae family because it is a monocot with an inferior ovary and a central structure containing all of its sexual organs. It is also strongly zygomorphic with modified sepals. I’ve identified it as being within the Calochilus genus, mainly because of its distinctive ‘beard’ or ‘hair’ covered labellum. Other key features that support this are growth in soil, the racemose nature of the inflorescence, the positioning of the labellum below the column and one developed leaf arising at the base. Calochilus species occurring in Sydney are very morphologically similar, but I have identified this plant as Calochilus robertsonii based on the length of the labellum being short and wide relative to the rest of the flower, unlike in Calochilus campestris and Calochilus gracillimus. It also has dark purple stripes on the sepals and petals and the observed lateral sepals are elongated and acute, which fits with the Calochilus robertsonii form more than either of the others. Calochilus robertsonii is known to occur in coastal scrub and heath consistent with where it was found. The other species known to occur in Sydney, Calochilus paludosus, has an enlarged dorsal sepal not observed on this plant.
